When asked to consider the culinary contributions of Scotland, most people will likely think of haggis. To our surprise, Scotland delighted us with a vibrant restaurant scene fit for a foodie. As with all Two of Takeoff’s trips, we made food central to our adventure in a new land.

Breakfast at Culloden House was exactly how you would imagine it being served hundreds of years ago. We were escorted into the dining parlor and seated with napkins placed in our laps. Fresh tea and coffee were poured to our liking and our orders were taken while a fireplace blazed in the pit and morning newspapers were handed over. We truly felt like Scottish royalty — with fresh butter, breads and croissants available on the ready and jams from the highlands mashed to perfection. We clinked our teacups and toasted to the day ahead.

Fresh from our night of Scotch drinking in Aberedeen, Patrick and I decided to get some fresh air with run along the shore. As previously noted, Aberdeen has a beautiful and extensive pier that runs along the ocean and we took full advantage of our close proximity to it on Tuesday morning. Free parking ended on Monday morning at 8:30am, so that’s exactly the time that we picked up our car – Jake the Juke (a bright blue, Nissan sport car that has become something like a pet to us along our journey) – and headed straight for Stirling Castle before continuing on to see St. Andrews. En route to Edinburgh, we decided to make a mini-detour to Melrose Abbey – one of Scotland’s most acclaimed historical sights. The Abbey dates back to the 1100’s when it was founded by Cistercian monks per request of King David I of Scotland. To this day, it is beautifully in tact and sits nestled in a valley within the town of Melrose. It really is breathtaking as you approach, with lush green hills that look like they were painted into the background.
